Aug 31: Teachers' Day Dinner

The DHS Teachers’ Day Dinner was held on 31st August, 2012 at the Fond Garden Restaurant, which is part of the QianXi Restaurant group located at the former Kallang Theatre. The theme for this year’s dinner was “Bringing RETRO Back”, inspired by growing nostalgia of the past in contemporary times. For the very first time, the Staff Welfare Committee (SWC) set up a PhotoBooth which gave all guests a fun opportunity to take photographs with their outrageous Retro costumes and ‘70s inspired hair-dos. The Photobooth proved to be an instant hit where guests swarmed towards, and striking their best retro poses in a bid for some glam and glitter.
The dinner commenced as the Principal, Dr Foo Suan Fong gave his opening address, when he specifically thanked all the teachers for their commitment and dedication to the profession. He also showed his appreciation to the School Advisory Committee (SAC) who generously sponsored the cost of the 9-course dinner. Teachers who have served more than 25 years of service in Dunman High School were also recognized when they received a token of appreciation from the SAC during the dinner.
One of the highlights of the dinner was definitely the retro tunes belted out by our own teachers as part of the Karaoke programme. These include English, Mandarin and Italian tunes as many talented ones amongst the staff, including Ms Debbie Tan, Mr Yeong Chan Kong, Ms Kathleen Ho, Mdm Wang Yan Chun, Mr Melvyn Tan, Ms Georgina Low, Mr Augustine Chan, Mr Genesius Ng, Mr Tan Chee Kian and Mr Wong Ye Xiang, gave their best rendition of the songs from an era where big hair curls, polka dots and skinnies were all the rage.
The Best Dressed Female and Male Staff were awarded to Ms Tan Mei Qiang from the Science Department, and Mr Chia Leong Fai from the Executive and Adminstrative Staff (EAS) respectively. After an intensive round of voting from the audience, they emerged from a strong field of candidates who were all donned in Retro-costumes and make-up, looking like Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe or even the infamous 1930s Chinese Triad Boss image from the movie, The Bund <上海滩>. The finale of the dinner saw Lucky Draw winners garnering home shopping vouchers, household products and cash rewards. Indeed, the Teachers’ Day Dinner “Bringing Retro Back” was a great success with teachers and staff letting their hair down, relishing every moment with the their colleagues and friends.
