Jul 04: Senior High Learning Festival

The Senior High Learning Festival (SHLF), an annual event in the SH calendar, was held on 4th and 5th of July 2012. During the two-day event, students from Year 5 and 6 attended a slew of workshops and seminars which aimed to equip them with the knowledge and competencies to help them in their applications for scholarships, as well as transition into university and the workplace of the 21st Century.
As freshmen of the Senior High programme, the Year 5 students were coached on the finer points of formal writing. Besides an introduction to the crafting of an effective personal statement, the cohort was also guided through the do’s and don’ts of email writing and online postings. As digital natives of the 21stCentury, where communication via online and electronic platforms is quickly becoming an expected basic competency, it is essential for the students to understanding the parameters of online discussions and to practice ‘e-tiquette’ while negotiating the potential pitfalls of the virtual world.
Building on what they had learnt from their Junior High years, the Year 6 students were given a refresher course on their Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality while acquiring the skills of how to apply this self-knowledge on future situations in order to attain maximum efficiency in their endeavours. Of course, amidst the packed schedule, there was also fun and games during the House Interaction session. Committees of the 4 Houses, Drakon, Bennu, Kirin and Homa ensured that their respective members were well-entertained whilst forging closer bonds and friendships.
As a dedicated programme which targets specific skill sets essential in the working world, the Senior High Learning Festival remains a vital component to the holistic development of Senior High students. The organisers look forward to putting together an even more enriching experience next year!
